Als ich im Sommer 2007 in Resolute war und im Southcamp Inn wohnte, dem Hotel von Aziz (Ozzy) Kheraj, lernte ich seine Tochter Brenda und ihre beiden Töchter Gabrielle und Cheyenne kennen. Brenda fuhr mich zum Thule Site, einer Ausgrabungsstätte außerhalb von Resolute. Cheyenne und Gabrielle fuhren mit. Ich habe das Bild von den beiden kleinen munteren, herumtobenden Mädchen noch vor mir. Cheyenne kam bei dem Unglück ums Leben, ihre Schwester Gabrielle überlebte.

Ich kannte auch Randy Reid, den Koch des Southcamp Inn. Auch er wurde bei dem Flugzeugabsturz getötet. Er war aus Barbados. Er war ein so unglaublich lustiger Mensch. Er machte selbst Witze darüber, dass er als es Mann aus der Karibik in einem Hotel nördlich des polarkreises arbeitet. Er hatte Geburtstag, als ich 2007 in resolute war. Ich war dabei, als Ozzy ihm eine Geburtstagstorte mit Kerzen überreichte.

Bei dem Unglück wurde auch Marty Bergmann getötet, den ich seit mehr als zehn Jahren kannte. Er war Leiter des Polar Continental Shelf Project in Resolute. Wer in der kanadischen Arktis forscht, kannte Marty Bergmann.

Wenige Wochen nach dem Unglück fand in Ottawa eine Konferenz über Europa, Kanada und die Arktis statt. Ich hatte die Ehre, einige Worte des Gedenkens an Marty Bergmann und alle Opfer des Flugzeugabsturzes von Resolute sprechen zu dürfen:

“I think it is appropriate to start this conference, “The European Union, Canada, and the Arctic” by remembering the victims of the Resolute Bay air crash a month ago.

Especially, I would like to pay tribute to Marty Bergmann, who was killed in this terrible accident.

Many of you knew Marty very well. He was director of the Natural Resources Canada Polar Continental Shelf Program and its recently expanded facility in Resolute, a hub for Arctic research.

Nobody who travelled north to do research on the Arctic could have missed encountering him. I met Marty more than ten years ago here in Ottawa at a conference, organized by the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee. Three years ago, when I visited Resolute, Marty showed me the Polar Continental Shelf Project, the first stage of the expansion to a modern hub for arctic research. He was so proud of his work up north. The facility in Resolute is his visible legacy. The last time we spoke was at a conference on Arctic Biodiversity at the Museum of Nature in Ottawa last fall.

It was always inspiring to discuss arctic issues with him. Marty was a source of knowledge and experience. He was an enthusiastic advocate of Arctic research, and his leadership will be missed in Canada and throughout the world.

Our thoughts go to his wife, his children and to all of his family. May they receive the support they need to help them find the strength and courage to get through this sad time.

Let us now observe a minute of silence in memory of Marty Bergmann and of all victims of the accident in Resolute.”
